FYI — Huddersfield Launch Night Roundup

Last Thursday saw the launch event for the first edition of FYI — Huddersfield. With the freshly printed guidebooks & web app (loaded with money saving offers) making their debut to the general public, a mix of excitement and nerves saw our project go live…
On the night, launch speeches were done away with and instead a far more intimate feel was chosen. Myself and Warren where around to meet guests and talk about the projects ambition. A launch film, jointly directed by FYI and Capsule Films, enthusiastically showed off all of Huddersfield’s intrinsic character, creativity and spirit while a fashion show followed up featuring clothes from two unisex fashion shops featured in FYI.

The reaction on the night was overwhelmingly positive and it appears there is a need for something of this nature that celebrates and politely informs people of great places to visit, unique to a particular location. People suggesting uses for the guidebooks ranging from gifts for visiting clients or for family overseas allowing them to choose what they do during forthcoming visits. New students coming to the town can pick one up and instantly feel like they belong to the local scene without any of the awkward adjustment or hitting the same places they would back “home”.

So where to now? Well, we’re going to be out and about delivering books to the places who have chosen to sell the guidebooks, encouraging them to add offers to the mobile optimised website and getting more people sell FYI in places where our amazing Huddersfield needs promoting!

FYI — Mobile Progress
Naming any new venture in the digital age relies on having a digital presence and that means finding a domain name. So we had double trouble - finding a name and a domain name. After many weeks of playing around with several name & domain combinations, we came up with FYI and foryrinfo.com which we thought worked really well.
It’s now 22 days until the launch of FYI Huddersfield, the pocket guide to independent places to eat, drink, shop and do stuff. We’ve been working really hard on the digital side of FYI and the development site is well under way and on target to be launched prior to the launch party on the 1st of March.

We wanted the website to enhance the FYI pocket guide, so in addition to the content available in the guide, the website will have maps, links to phone numbers and options to share across Facebook, Twitter or Google+. FYI will be a regular website that will work well on laptops and desktop PCs and Macs, but will work especially well on smart phones. The great thing with smart phones is that you are able to use your location, so then FYI can start to tell you which is the closest FYI bar or restaurant and how to get to them. Posted by Warren
It’s around 6 weeks until the launch of of FYI — Huddersfield; a pocket guide to independent places to eat, drink, shop and do stuff. Designed as a lovely printed guidebook and location aware mobile site, this blog is a document of the process of how the project came about and the people who have helped make it happen.
Here’s the story of how it all came together… Last summer Aidan Nolan of A.N.D Studio and Warren Slingsby of MAKE Online were chatting about starting a personal project that would allow them to help a wider community but also have creative freedom. This lead to the idea of creating a guide to the town they both live, work and socialise in — Huddersfield. The purpose of the guide would have clear objectives:
1 — Support local independent outlets.
2 — Encourage people to shop locally, rather than in national chains.
3 — Be better than what’s currently available.
4 — No adverts. Only reviews.
5 — Produced in print & digital formats.
With objectives in place all that was left to do was decide what to name this new guide to celebrate independent places, who would be featured and how it would be distributed over the town and hopefully, further a field. More on this in the next post.
